I never thought of pink and gold going well together until I saw O'Keeffe's painting It was Yellow and Pink. Putting this outfit together proved that it works. The necklace is so beautiful and reminds me so much of Rajasthan. The fun Indian film Bride and Prejudice was an influence as well. Aishwarya Rai is gorgeous! I really put this together for her.

Dominating, intense reds with bits of black and gold work perfectly with Miro's Drop of water on the Rose-Colored Snow. The painting and this ensemble are sleek and sophisticated, but still a little playful.

The painting, China, and this chic look remind me of the character Flying Snow in the beautiful film Hero by Zhang Yimou. If you haven't seen this gorgeous movie, do. The art production is incredible.

In Turpan, one needs a good, wide brimmed hat and a comfortable pair of sandals. The heat is dry and almost suffocating. Being on the Silk Road feels so exotic and so foreign. The film, The English Patient captures that same, transporting feeling. So much of it is set in the desert, in a foreign land, with much to discover.

The dark accessories paired with a slash of a khaki dress is much like the Frankenthaler painting, Message from Degas. That darkness is like a cool river running through the desert.

Even though Ryman uses a lot of white, he is purposeful in his choice of support. In the case of Untitled 1961, he chose brown paper. I did the same here. I chose a brown support and covered it with white. This is inspired not just by Ryman, but also the beautiful film White by Krzysztof Kieslowski. The film really does utilize a lot of the color white. It's a sad film, but the visuals make it so worth it!

I put together something a little exotic, using a richly patterned dress as the starting point and finding thick, warm textures to surround it. The area is known for textiles, particularly silk and wool felt. Animal hide is also prevalent, particularly in the mountain areas. I added a little jade as a reminder that we're in China.

Would you believe that the film The Kite Runner was actually filmed in Kashgar, China? It's a stand-in for Afghanistan. It makes sense since they are so close to each other geographically and the area is much the same. The borders don't make that much of a difference. Great film to watch for inspiration and to see what Kashgar is like.

Layers and warm, cozy tweeds are quintessential British and perfect for Henry Moore. There's a scene in the film, Atonement that reminds me so much of Mr. Moore. Of course, the time frame is about the same as his lifetime, but, also, specifically, the scene in the underground subway tunnels reminded me of his work the most. These drawings are so spooky and scary and beg to be explored.

Louise Bourgeois would likely wear something sophisticated, mysterious, and a little dark, particularly when she was painting like Les Fleurs. The dress reminds me of this sculpture; the organic shape, the undulating lines. And, of course, this all reminds me of film Paris Je T'aime. It features Paris and lots of personal stories told in vignettes. It's all so Louise Bourgeois!

It was probably pretty cold during some of the trip from Beijing to Shanghai taken by the Kangxi Emperor. His party would have had to dress warm and well, especially considering status. Their status must be obvious to the locals so they receive their due respect.

I chose warm wools, thick textures, and drapey silhouettes for the modern version of a woman who would have been in the Emperor's party. The greys reflect Wang Hui's color palette, as well as the green nail lacquer. Notice the white flower earrings that are very similar to the rhododendrons I saw on Emei Shan. The look reminds me of the film, Balzac and the Little Chinese Mistress. There are lots of great scenes with beautiful mountains.

Imagine it........ New York City in the sixties. A young woman (Eva Hesse) just starting out, studying, working, finding her way, living in a great big city full of new ideas. She's a little like Patty Duke in the odd 1969 movie Me, Natalie. She's reinventing herself, figuring out who she is and what she is capable of.

The Alps, the colors, all reminded me of the movie Downhill Racer. Not a great movie, but it does have great style. Color blocking, jumpsuits, stark colors, white aviator sunglasses, it's perfect. That's enough of a reason to see it.

Yes, it's silly, but true. The Mel Brook's film High Anxiety partly inspired this post. It's a hilarious movie (it is Mel Brooks after all) and it has a great optical illusion scene. It was the first one I ever saw. I was about 10 years old and it totally blew my mind. I wanted to see it over and over again, it was fascinating. How could lines and color look like their moving? It just seemed completely strange, but also completely intriguing. And, to top it off, Madeline Kahn in the Louis Vuitton jumpsuit standing next to a Louis Vuitton car is unforgettable (see it here, scroll down a bit).

Rich fabrics and textures and a Vermeer color palette: red, green, blue, and gold. The more Vermeer paintings I look at, the more I recognize the same textiles, the same room (of course), and the same objects. He obviously loved these objects and colors. I do wonder if the actual object was this exact color or if he altered it a little bit.

The modern Vermeer woman would wear something like this. It's the same richness of texture and color, just modernized. The film A Girl with a Pearl Earring was a bit of an inspiration as well. The color palette, the costumes,and the atmosphere were all inspiring.

Perfect for exploring the island of Naxos....a good sundress, a comfortable pair of handmade sandals, and jewelry inspired by the sculptures of the Cyclades. I was inspired by the sculptures, but also the movie Before Midnight. In the movie, the couple dines and walks through the Greek countryside. The Mediterranean light is so strong and the atmosphere so palpable, it feels like you're there.

Can't you just see both Marie-Therese Walter and Francoise Gilot wearing this dress on the beach? The colors are so Mediterranean.....bright yellows and greens and strong contrasts, just like the Mediterranean sunlight. I got a lot of ideas and inspiration from the film Surviving Picasso by James Ivory. Anthony Hopkins is marvelous as Picasso. If you haven't seen it, check it out. It's very summery!

Blues, greens, whites, these are the colors of San Francisco. Hitchcock knew that, too. Notice the predominant colors in the movie Vertigo, particularly the San Francisco scenes.

The skirt is reminiscent of a Hitchcock girl, the jacket because one ALWAYS needs a jacket in San Francisco, and a few flashes of color for the Victorians.

Can't you just see Niki de Saint Phalle in this get up? It's so French and so whimsical and so spring. It so reminds me of the movie May Fools by Louis Malle. Renting a large French cottage in the country with a large group of friends and family, picnicking underneath massive oaks and enjoying good weather and food. What a perfect way to spend a warm, spring afternoon.
